I Tried Out Uber for the First Time... I Loved It!

Unless you've been living under a rock the last few years, chances are you've heard of the popular ride-sharing service called Uber.

If you're not familiar with their service, Uber essentially works similar to a cab service, but without the formality you'd expect from the traditional taxi service; it allows someone who needs a ride somewhere to hire a driver straight from the Uber app, and upon arrival, take you to your destination.

I recently used Uber for the first time, and can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised by how it all works. The service is affordable and flexible enough that it allows people to use the service to meet their various needs.

One of my coworkers recently moved to Orlando, so she uses it to commute to and from work everyday. Another coworker goes out regularly to enjoy the nightlife, so she uses it to get home safely after a night out.

The service is pretty straightforward. You download the app on your smartphone, create a profile, and within minutes you can have someone pick you up and take you places.

One of the notable differences Uber in contrast to a traditional taxi service is that Uber cars can pretty much be any 2000 car or newer, so don't expect the car to be branded like a normal taxi car would be.

Uber has different levels to meet different customers' needs:
  • UberX: The least expensive Uber service. Seats 4 riders. Drivers use everyday cars that are 2000 or newer.
  • UberXL: Seats at least 6 passengers. An UberXL car will be an SUV or a Minivan. Higher fare price than UberX.
  • UberPlus/UberSelect: A luxury sedan that seats up to 4 riders. Expect a BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi, etc., with a leather interior.
  • UberPOOL: Share your ride with another person and split the cost. Only available in LA, SF, NYC, and Paris.
  • UberBLACK (Black Car): Uber’s ‘executive’ luxury service. Commercially registered and insured livery vehicles, typically a black SUV or luxury sedan. Highest fare price.
