Space Shuttle Endeavour STS-134 Solid Rocket Boosters

One of the perks I get to enjoy while at work is occassional views of neat space equipment.

Today's treat was seeing the Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs) as they were being moved to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) High Bay area for attachment to the external tank, which is set to take place some time next month, in preparation for mission STS-134.  STS-134 is currently scheduled to launch on

Earlier in the day, when I passed by, the doors on the left were open just exposing the SRBs.  But as I drove back around a couple of hours later I noticed that engineers were actually moving the SRBs to the High Bay area (see right open doors in the picture).

To me, the SRBs look like toy-sticks in front of the VAB.  It's hard to imagine they are actually almost 150 feet in length, or about the length of a 15-story building.

  1. It's funny how unimpressive the SRBs look without the bigness of the ET and orbiter. Almost like they're naked. You are so lucky to get to be around this stuff at work.
