Thoughts on Mitt Romney

Is it me, or is there something un-American--and probably ironic--about a person who earned a huge amount of money here in the United States, and then keeps a huge chunk of that money in offshore accounts probably to avoid paying taxes on it? Then, that same person has the audacity to run for President of the United States so that he can then earn more money, which by the way, it's paid for with American taxpayers' money?

I don't know about you, but that seems to me like a load of bullshit for someone to do that. I can understand why he wouldn't release his taxes; he doesn't have to. But paying one's dues to the country which has given you the opportunity to earn a considerable amount of money seems to me like it is not only the right thing to do, but a noble thing to do considering how many jobs he has ended or off-shored with the many company takeovers Bain Capital has been a part of. Why a noble thing to do? Because when those people who lose their jobs probably end up receiving unemployment benefits, probably end up needing healthcare, or food stamps. They probably have kids who are in the public school system. That's why, in my opinion, it would be the "noble" thing to do for him to pay his taxes.

But there isn't anything noble about Romney's business practices.  I mean, his vulture capitalist practices really have a double whammy on the US economy when you really stop to think about it. Not only did Romney help end jobs and indebted companies, but in the process, he got rid of many taxpayers, which by the way, it is exactly what Republicans say we need in this country. And we do need taxpayers in this country. But those people who are out of work need unemployment relief, food stamps, healthcare, etc. in order to survive. And who's paying for that? Government is.

Which leads me to this. If companies out there are getting rid of jobs left and right, and companies that have the capital won't spend it on hiring new people, then where does the vicious cycle end? The answer in this case--as much as I hate to say it--would be government. Government has the authority to tax companies and people, and also has the authority to borrow money if it needs it. I think right now isn't the time for government to start making spending cuts. If anything, it should be spending more in order to help save or create more jobs. When government spends money, that money doesn't go to investors or to a small group of people, it goes right back to the economy in the form of jobs.

I imagine there's millions of people out there who would rather earn a living and work hard to make the "American Dream", than to sit at home doing nothing especially when you have a family at home who depends on you. So why don't we forget about republican proposals to cut spending and actually start borrowing more money? That way we can hire the people we need to do the things this country desperately needs? Like building roads, bridges, schools, hiring teachers that will educate the next generation of dreamers.

Don't take it at face value when you hear a politician or someone off the streets tell you that government isn't the answer. In the case of the current economy it is probably the only answer. General Motors is a prime example of this, not to mention the banks that were bailed out when they were on the brink of collapse.

Having Mitt Romney in office means that we could go back to policies that started the economic mess we're in right now. That's why I'm not voting for Mitt Romney in November.
