Mass Shootings and Gun Control in America

Shootings can be greatly reduced in this country if we, and our politicians, take action. But in the United States gun violence will continue to be a problem for generations to come, because we continue to give-in to the status quo.

After the Charleston shooting, Bobby Jindle called Obama's call for action on gun control "completely shameful." And now that his own constituents have been victims of a shooting, it is still "not a good time" to discuss how to prevent these shootings from happening.

We need to ask our leaders: "when is a good time to discuss gun violence in this country?"

For Bobby Jindle—and people who defend the gun lobby—there never seems to be a good time to discuss and debate the issue of gun violence in America. The reality of it all is that it is about time we started discussing solutions to the problem of mass shootings and gun violence. Sandy Hook should have been a turning point for our local, state, and federal government officials to debate serious reforms on the way we approach the gun culture in this country, but it wasn't.

Mass shootings are far too common in America.

Unfortunately, counting the Chattanooga shooting, we had two mass shootings in one week.

There has been 75 mass shootings since Sandy Hook. How many more will there be before we do something about it?

Are we too late to do something about it?

I don't think so. At least, I'd like to think that not all hope is lost for us to start making a difference today, so that our children can live in a better future tomorrow. It will take you, me, and a lot of people to be very loud about it. It's not going to be a one-off approach to this problem, but we need to do it. We owe it to ourselves and our children, but above all, to all the victims of mass shootings.

We cannot prevent every shooting from happening, but we shouldn't let these shootings continue to be so common. We can find ways to prevent them from being a common occurrence. Doing nothing about this issue should no longer be an option.

I don't have all the answers of what we can do with this issue, but the least we could do is start a conversation about it. Tell me, what can we do to prevent them?
